Track Spikes
Track Spike Sizes — Choosing the Right Railroad Spike
Not all railroad spikes are the same size. The right cut spike depends on your rail weight, tie dimensions, and track class. Kimes Steel stocks four standard sizes:
- 5/8” × 6” — The standard mainline spike for 90 lb and heavier rail. This is the most common spike on North American Class I and short-line railroads. Approximately 118 pieces per 100 lb keg.
- 9/16” × 5” — A medium-duty spike used on lighter mainline and industrial trackage where a full 5/8” spike is overspec.
- 1/2” — Common on branch lines, industrial spurs, and lighter rail sections (60–85 lb rail). Approximately 137 pieces per 50 lb pail.
- 3/8” — Used on narrow-gauge, light-duty industrial, and specialty track. Approximately 315 pieces per 50 lb pail.
All spikes are new stock, manufactured to AREMA specifications. Contact us if you’re unsure which size fits your application — we can match the spike to your rail section and tie spec.
